Each of us who have found what lays at the other end of the rainbow have our own reasons why we LOVE P-town…Recently I had a chance to find out just what that Bon Vivant of the photographic world IZZY BERDAN finds when he trips the light-box fantastic and clicks his shutter in Gaye Olde P-towne…
What in your world affects your creativity?
Most of the work i do starts with a question i have that i feel needs answering. sometimes it manifests into other work, sometimes it evolves into an idea, and once the seed is planted i can’t let it go. i have to work my ass off till i can figure out how to manifest or produce it. that shit is all the bigger question stuff… like the « how do I make change in the world through art »… then on the other side, there are pretty things. pretty things that bring me joy. pretty things that must be shared with the world so other people can also experience joy.
How do you think technology has changed photography?
Pro’s… tech has made artist exposure something amazing. there are so many talented artists in the world that would have never been discovered had the internet not made it’s way to our phones. also when it comes to inspiration and other artists to collaborate with technology has made the world a click away with a never ending supply of what ever it is that we as artist need.
Con’s… people think less. for all the possibilities that come from this wealth of knowledge at our fingertips, some times it seams like people are just finger painting… (not that there’s anything wrong with painting with ones fingers) I am actually totally ok with people picking up the trade of photography from a hobby stand point. there are hundreds of tools out there for people to explore photography all the way down to their cell phone… an artist doesn’t need to work with thousands of dollars of gear for them to make art. I’ve seen some amazing work from hobby photographers that competes or exceeds some people that claim the title photographer…. #notnoshade #wellmaybealittle
Was there a Aha! Moment in life when you knew you had to be an Artist?
I grew up assisting my dad and his photography so from a young age i viewed photography as a job. as i grew up i met people & artists from all over the world. i couldn’t pin point a moment in my life when i decided i had to be an artist, because ever since i was young i’ve been a creative. i knew it would always be in my life, but within the last 10 years or so i felt i had work in my head that needed to be seen by other people. so less of an « AHA moment » and more of a « Coming of Age story »…. #adultonset
How do you know just when to click the shutter?
When i was younger i def clicked way to much, for fear of missing something. like the adult i’ve become, i no longer suffer from FOMO… if i’m doing street photography i look for things out of the ordinary or environments that we often look past. it’s like stopping to smell the flowers… if the flowers grew in the kitchen of a chinatown restaurant… in the studio i will often stare at my subject for a number of minutes as i study their body and then mentally twist, fold and contort them into multiple positions before i actually ask them to move. every now and again i’ll have a subject stretching between positions and that will inspire a new position i hadn’t thought of. i also have learned not to push myself or the subject physically and mentally, so sometimes i’ve called a shoot off or postponed.
What is it about P-town that makes you visit?
P-town is the real life oz/neverland. It is the most magical portal on this planet that connects us to another world with endless possibilities.
Because of this magic, this destination also attracts like-minded from all over the world, and I’ve made some of my best friends from this place. I also love Ptown off season with the hardy townies that pull through the brutal quiet winter. it seems so weird making reasons why i visit Ptown…. when i can’t think of a reason i wouldn’t visit Ptown, but for the list makers in us all….
Drag queens, fairies, art, glitter, seafood, dogs, cold brew coffee, bears, gym rats, twinks, glitter, townies, tattoos, piercings, leather, feathers, pasties, Portuguese fried dough, cabaret shows, Broadway singers, t-dance, barkers, carnival, hHalloween theme weeks, families, couples, sluts, straight allies, fisherman, beaches, sunsets, sailboats, and glitter…. did i mention glittter?!
As this world continues to spin in a whirlwind of events…its reassuring that someone like Izzy is there putting his unique spin on it all.
