Speaking of Art with Jeff Diaz and John Robb
By M.Sebastian Araujo
Provincetown has been inspiring people for many years,in many creative ways. Recently I had a chance to catch up with two chaps who have been making Ptown their get away from it all place for a long time Jeff Diaz and John Robb. They are the Designing duo that has been creating a wave of accolades in Men’s Fashion with their America Styling , Sensibility and Craftsmanship. They do that with their Boston based company ” Inseam. ”
What in Your Life inspires your work?
John: Cars, architecture, Nature, industrial elements like iron, wood, machinery, old images from the 30’s and 40’s.
Jeff: Women’s Fashion, Women’s Shoes Landscape colors, the ocean. Noise, Silence. Dancing.
What changes do you see in the FASHION scene today?
John:There are several things: Everyone is calling themselves designers these days–Paris Hilton ,Ellen Degeneres, and even Pharrel. There are a ton of new Menswear brands lately. More made in USA products are coming to market.
Jeff: TodayMade in the USA seems to be everyones tag line, sort of the thing to do.We never imagined being part of a movement that started from a belief to make clothing that fits well, was well made and produced right here. For some it maybe a trend ;we believed in it since the start of our company
What makes Fashion sell?
John:Price, uniqueness and quality, in that order.
Jeff: Flawless Design, Attention to Detail, Good Customer Service. Being nice to someone makes them a repeat client .
Was there a ” lightbulb” moment in your career when you realized that you were a Designer/Brand? If so what was it?
John: I think I realized it when Isaw our product coming through the production house and then seeing it on men across the USA and Europe.
Jeff: I have never considered myself a designer. I consider myself a curious being -a creative person!
How hard is it for a Design Co. to survive in the world we live in today?
John:Extremely! This is not Project Runway, people! This is real life. It is extremely competitive and labor and cost intensive. You have to have a stomach and bank account for this business. Also, you need to be flexible as trends are speeding up and peoples loyalty and attention spans are decreasing.
Jeff: Incredibly hard as the attention to detail requires both the creative and the business aspect.Running a business can be outright test to ones nerves.
What is it about Ptown that keeps you and other creative people living there or coming back ?
John: I love Ptown! As conservative as it has become compared to years ago, it is still freer than most places. The community, art, design and connections to creativity are strong. You can be outrageous if you want to be, it’s kind of expected !
Jeff: A sense of Freedom. Even with all the changes, I still feel like when in Ptown that I can be whatever it is I want to be. Its the equivalent of a test bed for anything your mind dares to envision.
