I had the radio on recently while working in my garden and that song came on and it stuck in my brain.I am by no means a Sreisand/Sondheim Queen,but it stuck just the same! I will admit however I did love ” The Owl and the Pussycat”.It made me think about a recent chat I had with Jarrod Beck while he was wrapping up a fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center, here in Gay Olde Ptowne. Jarrod Beck lives in his Art the way a Trappist Monk lives in his cell. He seemingly has no other preoccupation, nor desire to do anything other than make Art.Tall,Handsome and a bit Shy this chap really puts his entire being into his work. While I was there he was working on many pieces at the same time – some were drying,others melding and a few were destined to be recycled and turned into yet more art. Amid the creative chaos of his studio I marveled at the tangible process of making Art. He confided in me that once during an “open studio” day someone commented to a friend in a hushed voice, “How do you know what is the art and what isn’t .” I think he actually took this a great compliment…as he should have. There are many words to describe his work,but I will let the pictures say all . I will SAY that Jarrod Beck is a Great Artist! One that the entire world will come to reckon with sometime very soon,mark my words!

After I finished chatting with Mr Beck, I ran into the “Peggy Guggenheim”of Ptown,Ms Patty Deluca,the proprietess of the Deluca Gallery. She was just opening her amazing gallery located on Commercial Street. I was truly amazed at the works she is currently exhibiting. Now I am never one to pass by the traditional art forms butI must say it is very cool to find someone with foresight and determination to exhibit the newer and theless traditional Art forms.This space is the perfect place to do it. Superbly curated and well hung pieces flow together to form a sort of Guggenheim Museum worthy collection of Painting,Sculpture and mixed media Art all made by contemporary Artists here in Provincetown. Reminding us that is still aplace where Art no only sells but sometimes begins a new.Bravo Patty…and All who Hang with her!

I strolled on,straightening my tie and making sure I was not too rumpled, I headed to the venerable Provincetown Art Association Museum for a chat with Museum Director Chris McCarthy.Often I think museums get a bit too precious and aware current trends while trying to keep up with preservation,education and new technologies.P.A.A.M, I am very happy to say is not that at all.
Like the town that surrounds it,it has undergone many transformations. Through fat and lean times,always remaining true to the original mission of its founders. When the new addition was finished many felt it was not a good idea.I think, it was the best thing that has occured since its founding. Now they have an up to date technologically advanced enviornment inwhich to house and protect its collection,also creating a format for traveling exhibitons and world class events. Ms McCarthy is very passionate about Art,Life and Provincetown.She has brought to this museum a wealth of knowledge and capability. One of the recent events she mentioned was the recent recognition by First Lady Michelle Obama of PAAM’s “Art Reach ” youth program https://www.paam.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Press-Release-PAAM-at-White-House.pdf .
She also impressed upon me how the museum could not function if it were not for the vast array of talented and forward looking community member volunteers .My cap is off to you Ms.McCarthy for all your hardwork and your ability to keep the conversation between town and Art Museum going forward.

I really enjoy doing what I do.This afternoon filled with Art and interesting people is definetely my cup of tea. So while you are here enjoying all the Gaye Olde Ptown has to offer make sure you take sometime to give your soul the gift of Art.Visit an Open Artist’s Studio, a Gallery or P.A.A.M.
