Letter from Provincetown by M.Sebastian Araujo
..Last few days of Summer have passed and Autumns cooler weather is starting to make us all head indoors…
Recently I tied a rust colored silk scarf around my neck and donned a tweed cap and got on my old boneshaker of a bike and headed out in search of Art.
First Stop corner of Pearl Street and BAker Avenue…the home of Proivincetown’s own enfant terrible Ryan Landry.Thrugh a well worn white picket fench past a garden of lvoely lushness Jack Russell Terriers flitting here and there and yapping a goodmorning! Up to the very well preserved old green painted oak door which always seems to be half ajar with GoldDust Orphans(His Theater Troupe) trooping in an out all day. “Goodmorning Mother Dawling” which is his nick-name for yours truly…we’ve been friend for perhaps longer than either of us might care to mention. Into a small and very organized and built in study…this is the place where the magic happens…play,any purchases and all the other conversations and drams of life unfold.This AM seems just a busy as ever. Working on a new play,keeping up worth his Community service work and shopping on Ebay. This room has seen the working of this guys mind for a long time and some of his great work…M,Pornnochio,Midered Firece have been created here. It is truly a person zone with a sense of history and unique style. Busy always I snap a few pix and kiss him on the forehead and close the heavy door behind me as a vociferous JackRussell escorts me to the gate,bell rings,latch catches and back on my rusty bike.

Down Commercial Street past the remenants of Summer and upstairs at the Post Office which is a marvel of 1930’s WPA architecture to the studio of Chris Sousa. The creaky door opens and I am amazed at what I find..an actual working painters studio right upstairs from the Post Office… seems back in the day the gov’t did this ti defray the cost of the building and it has given this amazing portrait artist an affordable ,Well lit and spacious place which he shared with other painters. Chris came his work after awhile of telling himself he could not do it,and when he moved to Ptown…he began to see other doing it,and than began to pain himself.His work fuses the very classical portraiture milieu with a modern sensibility which has give him a wide hearth of possibilities. Talent is everything and knowing how to adapt a classical medium into a very modern form is what has drawn me to his work time and time again. And from the reception at his revert showings I am not alone!

…The final stop on this lovely late Summer’s day is the Studio/Home and Garden of Richard Lacasse. I am always amazed when I pass by or drop in as I have the terrible habit of doing…RIchard is always up to something . Like the man behind the curtain in the “Wizrad of OZ’ he al;ways seems to be creating,arranging or pulling ome sort of string to make this old Rock of a World and this corrked Olde Cape Cod town a bit more interesting. His sculptures are made of found and created objects fused together to form a singualr vision and thought.Which is refreshingly in this time of mass culture is his veru own. Not concerned with marketing,blah blah BLAH! he beats his own drum. Rencent showings and creations have been well received and left some of us clamouring for more…He works in a mid-century house hidden away the wilderness of Ptown…far from the bustles on Commercial Street and has used his home,studio and GArden as inspiration,testing ground and often workspace,much the chagrin of his life partner…who I surmise is always very glad when one of the pieces go on to their new home. Living with Art and Artists sometimes isnt easy…but I am sure its ner boring.

Well thats it for now ..Autumn is on its way and I am off on my rusty old bone shaker to gather a rich harvest of things to tell you ALL very soon. Bew Well and Love one another as much as you can !
