Independence Day weekend
Ptown Sights by Peter Hocking
After posting something about the recent Brexit vote on Facebook, an American friend told me that it wasn’t any of my business and that it didn’t affect me. I disagree. We live in an interconnected world, where local decisions resonate around the world. In Provincetown I was delighted to stumble upon a positive expression of our connectedness, as people gathered and cheered on Commercial Street for the European Football Championship over Independence Day weekend.

What in this CRAZY World around us affects your Creativity?
My artwork (and life work) used to be more overtly political, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve recognized that aesthetic response can catalyze change, too. I have no doubt that everyday the injustices found on my Twitter feed will enrage me (and still sometimes jolt me to action), but I’m increasingly committed to crafting reflective moments as an antidote to the collective madness that passes as public life. I believe that if we’re committed to changing the world, we need to cultivate imagination – which is the only thing that allows us to conceptualize a different way of being from that we accidentally happen upon. Imagination requires regular opportunity for reflection, and I hope my artworks crack open a little poetic, reflective space for those who encounter them. I want to put a little beauty into the world.

Don’t miss one of New England’s grandest Fourth of July celebrations, as fireworks bring joy to the young and the young at heart. Independence Day Celebrations kick off on July 3rd with one of Crown & Anchor’s mega-themed dance parties – Freedom Beach Party where world-class DJs rock the sandy dance floor. Festivities continue with a family-oriented and fanciful Fourth of July Parade down Commercial Street. And end your day – or begin your night – with a spectacular Fireworks Display reflected in the calm waters of Provincetown Harbor.
As the Fireworks settle the Town awakens to an annual rite of summer passage – the arrival of the Bears. Bear Week in Ptown, July 9-17 is when a hairy and hearty breed of men crowd the quaint streets of the town in search of bear or cub packs. On tap for this unique faction of gay culture are food feasts, boat cruises, pool parties, live acts and late night dancing. As the men head out of town the women take over with the annual Girl Splash – July 19-23. Girl Splash is an amazing lesbian weekend loaded with special events including: whale watching, schooner sails, star-studded entertainment, pool and dance parties. Girl Splash is one of the “can’t miss” events for women who love women anywhere to be found.
Strollers and playgrounds are the order of the week as Provincetown welcomes all American kids to Family Week 2016, July 23-30. No need to leave the kids at home when you visit Ptown with fun and games hosted by the Family Equality Council. Family Week in Provincetown is one of the largest annual gathering of LGBTQ parents and their families in the world. The memory-filled week will include a family Olympics, a “Run the Trails for Whales 5K,” interactive music classes and pool parties. I’m fascinated by the ways we write our identities into the landscape. Sometimes we make big statements (the Pilgrim Monument, for example), but more often we make our stories known in moments of celebration. Last weekend’s Portuguese Festival and Blessing of the Fleet are marvelous examples of how Provincetown makes space for the experience of the many people who are essential to its vibrant culture.

Violas are pretty intrepid, but I was surprised (and delighted) to find these blooms sprouting through the crushed clam shells of my neighbor’s driveway. Provincetown’s beauty emerges in the tiniest details.

Provincetown is beloved for its beaches and lively town, but I’ve come to love its woods, too. Earlier this month, I stumbled across this colony of Lady Slippers (Cypripedium acaule Ait.) in the woods near Blackwater Pond.
