John Deignan is a Landscape Photographer Extraordinaire! He photographs Cape Cod in all its glory, all the year round. For a long time I have been awed by his work. Recently I had a chance to catch up with him and find out just what makes his shutter click…and click and click until it finds just the right image…
What in the World around you influences your Art?
Beauty always abounded in my home when I was growing up. Art, antiques and design were important to my parents. They both had a “good eye”. The ambiance of our home displayed good taste. We were surrounded by the visual!Recently I have been able to take a step back a appreciate the beauty that surrounds us on Earth. Although I grew up with these things there was a time that I walked through life missing it all and taking it for granted.
The beauty of nature especially on Cape Cod stimulates my creativity. Often time there is an adjustment in state of mind transitioning from living in Boston and being on The Cape.
Do innovations in technology affect Art?
Photography will always be in the eye of the photographer but techniques have changed tremendously in recent years. It has become more of a combination of art and technology. Beauty, composition, light and proportion will always be vital for the artist/photographer to “capture the moment”. Technology will never see the shot.
What makes people respond to Art?
People collect art/photography to surround themselves with beauty. A beautiful atmosphere brings us calmness, serenity and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. In some ways I would say it’s like reading a book in that photography/art is mentally stimulating, conjures up thoughts and memories and allows us to be somewhere else through viewing the images.
Was a there a “Shinning Moment” in your life when you realized you were an Artist?
I have always enjoyed drawing especially as a way for me to recall happy memories. I never really thought art would be part of my life later on. I love the fact that I able to “see” the world around me. It hasn’t always been the case. I am fortunate enough to be able to combine my photography with a full time in Boston.
What makes Cape Cod a place that creative people live and visit every year?
I look forward to returning to Cape Cod as often as possible. The light, the air, the ocean and the landscapes all draw me back. I am able to achieve serenity on Cape Cod. Serenity, spirituality and tranquility are evident in my photographs. I also have a fondness for the fishing community and all of the various sea going vessels on Cape Cod.
I love light!
While the world around us keeps spinning and things change and change and change.
It is good it is to know that Olde Cape Cod is Still here and inspiring people from all over the World.
For a Brief Stay or a Lifetime, Cape Cod is truly a Great place to be….
